With an area of just more
than 2,053 square kms Gran Canaria is the largest island of the archipelago. The
island's interior is dominated by a long mountain chain which in turn
is commanded by the snow capped Mount Teide. This awesome volcanic mass
looms out to the sky reaching 3,718 metres above the Atlantic waters.

Gran Canaria information. |
The oval shaped
Gran Canaria is third largest island of the Canary Archipelago covers
1,532 square km’s. The Gran Canaria landscape climbs to it’s
highest peak "Pozo de las Nieves" which looms to 1,949 meters
at the center of the island. The encircling slopes are cut by "barrancos"
which are dry ravines. The contrast of scenery and climate is quite remarkable.
Inland the panorama varies from stark rugged mountains to beautiful tranquil
valleys. On the coastline it can change from extreme awesome cliffs to
gentle golden sand dunes. And just like Tenerife the climate is characterized
by a fertile, humid north and an arid dry south. See our Gran
Canaria nature page for more details. |

| History of Gran Canaria | |||
Gran
Canaria history is extremely colourful and dates back for several
millennia. Their existence was known, or at least postulated, in ancient
times, and in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, Plato spoke of Atlantis,
a continent that had sunk beneath the ocean floor in a great cataclysm
that left only the peaks of its highest mountains above the water. Over
the years it has inspired various writers and artists and was also a place
where bandits operated. |
